อำเภอช้างกลางตั้งอยู่ทางตอนกลางค่อนไปทางทิศตะวันตกของจังหวัด มีอาณาเขตติดต่อกับเขตการปกครองข้างเคียง ดังนี้
-ทิศเหนือ ติดต่อกับอำเภอฉวาง
-ทิศตะวันออก ติดต่อกับอำเภอลานสกา
-ทิศใต้ ติดต่อกับอำเภอทุ่งสงและอำเภอนาบอน
-ทิศตะวันตก ติดต่อกับอำเภอฉวาง

ประวัติความเป็นมา
ชื่อ “ ชื่อช้างกลาง ” นั้นคู่เคียงกับ “ ช้างซ้าย ” และ “ ช้างขวา ” ในประวัติศาสตร์กิ่งอำเภอช้างกลาง (ชาลี ศิลปรัศมี อดีตข้าราชการครู อ.3 ระดับ 9 ผู้ศึกษาค้นคว้าประวัติศาสตร์พื้นบ้าน) กล่าวถึงที่มาของชื่อนี้ในประวัติศาสตร์โบราณคดี ว่าดังนี้ การยกทัพด้วยพล 17 หมื่น ของพระเจ้าสุชิตราชแห่งตามพรลิงค์ (นครศรีธรรมราช) ไปตีอาณาจักละโว้ เมื่อ พ.ศ. 1570 ย่อมแสดงว่านครศรีธรรมราช ได้ใช้กองทัพช้างตั้งแต่บัดนั้นมา และช้างป่าที่จับมาฝึกเป็นช้างศึก หรือใช้ในราชการ หรือช้างเผือกที่ส่งไปบรรณาการกรุงศรีอยุธยา ก็ได้ไปจากป่าเขาหลวงแถบเขาพระสุเมรุ หรือเขาเหมน ทุ่งสง ฉวาง นาบอน ทุ่งใหญ่ ถ้ำพรรณรา ลำพูล (พระแสง) นั้นเอง ช้างที่จับได้ฝึกหัดแล้วจากป่านี้ นครศรีธรรมราช จะจัดส่งเข้ากรมถึง 3 กรม คือ
• กรมช้างขวา ตั้งอยุ่ที่เวียงสระ สำหรับควบคุมช้างที่จับได้แถบลำพูล และควบคุมพื้นที่บริเวณลุ่มน้ำตาปี บริเวณปากแม่น้ำ ซึ่งขณะนั้นจังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานียังไม่มี มีแต่ไชยาเก่าที่บ้านดอน สุราษฎร์ธานีเพิ่งตั้งเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2456
• กรมช้างกลาง ตั้งอยู่หมู่ที่ 5 ตำบลช้างกลาง เพื่อควบคุมช้างที่จับได้แถบป่าฉวาง ทุ่งใหญ่ นาบอน ทุ่งสง และกรมช้างกลางจะควบคุมพื้นที่ 4 หัวเมืองอันเป็นบริเวณยุทธศาสตร์ ด้านตะวันตกของเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช คือหัวเมืองพิปูน หัวเมืองกะเปียด หัวเมืองละอาย และหัวเมืองหลักช้างโดยกรมช้างกลางนี้ เป็นกลังหลักของกองทัพช้างของนครศรีธรรมราช มาเป็นเวลายาวนาน
• กรมช้างซ้าย ตั้งอยู่ตำบลช้างซ้าย ปัจจุบันอยู่ในเขตอำเภอพระพรหม สำหรับพักช้างที่ใช้ในตัวเมืองรักษาพระนคร

อำเภอช้างกลางเดิมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของอำเภอฉวาง กระทรงมหาดไทยได้ประกาศลงวันที่ 26 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2539 แบ่งพื้นที่การปกครองออกมาตั้งเป็น กิ่งอำเภอช้างกลาง โดยให้มีผลบังคับต้งแต่วันที่ 15 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2539 ในปีเดียวกัน และต่อมาในวันที่ 24 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2550 ได้มีพระราชกฤษฎีกายกฐานะขึ้นเป็น อำเภอช้างกลาง โดยมีผลบังคับตั้งแต่วันที่ 8 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2550 ในปีเดียวกัน
